Alright, listen up. You decided you wanna get into IT or level up your career, and now you’re staring at a list of certifications that looks like someone spilled alphabet soup on a whiteboard. CompTIA, Cisco, Microsoft, AWS, ISACA — what the heck does any of it mean and where do you even start?
Relax. I got you.
I’ve been in IT long enough to remember when getting certified actually meant something, and lemme tell you, it still does — if you pick the right one. So here’s the no-nonsense breakdown to help you stop overthinking and start studying.
First, Ask Yourself One Question
Where do you wanna end up?
Seriously, that’s it. Everything else flows from there. You wouldn’t drive to Jersey without knowing which exit to take, right? Same deal here. The cert you pick should point toward the job you actually want, not just the one your cousin told you pays well.
Want to work on networks? There’s a cert for that. Want to get into cybersecurity? Different cert. Cloud computing? Whole other ballgame. Figure out the destination first, then we’ll talk about the ticket to get there. And if you’re coming from a completely different field, check out How to Transition from a Non-IT Career to IT with Certifications — it’s got you covered.
The Starter Certs Worth Your Time
If you’re brand new to IT and don’t know a router from a repeater, here’s where to start. I also did a deep dive on this in The Best Entry-Level IT Certifications to Start Your Career if you want the full breakdown.
CompTIA A+ — This is the one you grab when you’re starting from absolute zero. It covers the fundamentals, hardware, software, troubleshooting, the works. It’s not glamorous but it gets your foot in the door. Think of it as your IT driver’s license.
CompTIA Network+ — Once you’ve got the basics down, this one gets you into networking. Understanding how data moves around is foundational to almost everything else in IT. Don’t skip this step and then wonder why nothing makes sense later.
CompTIA Security+ — Cybersecurity is on fire right now and this cert is one of the most recognized entry points into the field. It’s also DoD approved, which means if government work is on your radar, this one’s practically mandatory. Want the full scoop on what the Security+ covers and how to prep for it? Check out this Security+ training guide. Want to go deeper on security certs? Read Cybersecurity Certifications in High Demand.
Cisco CCNA — If networking is your thing and you want to go deeper, the CCNA is the gold standard. It’s harder than the CompTIA certs, no question, but the respect it gets in the industry is real. Hiring managers see CCNA on a resume and they know you put in the work. I know because I passed it on my first attempt and lived to tell about it.
AWS Cloud Practitioner — Cloud isn’t the future anymore, it’s the present. If you’re even remotely thinking about cloud, start here. It’s the most beginner-friendly AWS cert and opens doors faster than you’d expect.
What to Ignore (For Now)
Look, I know the CISSP sounds impressive at dinner parties. So does saying you’re a Certified Ethical Hacker. But if you’re just starting out, these certs are gonna eat you alive. They require real world experience to back them up, and walking into an exam without that foundation is like showing up to a marathon having only ever walked to the fridge.
There’s a time for those. That time is not right now. When you’re ready though, check out So You’ve Got Your CISSP? What’s Next?
The Honest Truth About Certs
A cert alone isn’t gonna hand you a six figure job on a silver platter. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. What a cert does is prove to an employer that you know your stuff, that you can commit to learning, and that you’re serious about this career. Combined with some hands-on experience — even home lab stuff — a good cert is absolutely worth the investment. Don’t just take my word for it, I broke down the full numbers in Are IT Certifications Worth It? A Cost-Benefit Analysis.
I’ve seen people completely change their careers with the right certification. Walked out of dead end jobs and into IT roles they never thought were possible. It happens. But it starts with picking the right cert and actually putting in the work.
And hey, if you bomb your first exam, it’s not the end of the world. Seriously. I wrote about that too — Failing an IT Certification Exam: Why It’s Not the End of the World.
So What Should YOU Pick?
Here’s the cheat sheet:
- Total beginner? Start with CompTIA A+
- Want to get into networking? Go Network+ then CCNA
- Cybersecurity is calling your name? Security+ is your move
- Cloud is the goal? Grab the AWS Cloud Practitioner first
- Already have some IT experience? Skip A+ and go straight to the cert that matches your target role
Stop waiting for the perfect moment. Pick one, make a study plan, and get after it. The only bad choice is doing nothing. And once you’re certified, check out Unlocking the Big Bucks: IT Certifications That Lead to High-Paying Jobs so you know exactly what to do with that shiny new cert.
Now go get certified. I’ll be here when you’re ready for the next one.
Big Dog Cert
Alright, lemme give it to ya straight. No sugarcoating, no corporate fluff, just the real deal. I'm Mike. Fifty years on this planet, and I've done it all. I started out in IT back when "the cloud" was just what you saw out the window, worked my way through HR (yeah, I've been the guy who had to sit across the table from people and keep a straight face), and then did a stretch in sales where I learned real quick that if you can't sell yourself, nobody's buying what you're pitching. Three careers. One guy. Zero patience for textbooks that read like they were written by robots.
