How Long Does It Take to Pass the CompTIA Security+?

The CompTIA Security+ is the most widely recognized entry-level cybersecurity certification in the country, and the first question most people ask when they start considering it is how long it’s actually going to take. The real answer is that it depends on your starting point, but I can give you real benchmarks that will help you plan your prep without either panicking or dramatically underestimating the commitment.

If you’re coming in with no prior IT background and no previous certifications, plan for three to six months of studying before you sit for the exam. That’s not meant to be discouraging, that’s just being realistic about the scope of the material. The Security+ covers threats, attacks, and vulnerabilities; architecture and design; implementation; operations and incident response; and governance, risk, and compliance. There’s real depth across all of those domains, and treating this like a two-week cram session is a great way to donate $404 to CompTIA and walk away with nothing to show for it.

If you already have the CompTIA A+ or Network+ under your belt, or if you have some professional IT experience in a related area, you can realistically cut that timeline down to one to three months of focused prep. The foundational knowledge you’ve already built accelerates everything. You’ll recognize concepts faster, connect the dots more quickly, and spend less time on material that would otherwise be completely new territory.

The exam itself is 90 questions, a mix of multiple choice and performance-based questions (PBQs), and you have 90 minutes to get through all of it. The passing score is 750 on a scale of 100 to 900. The performance-based questions are where a lot of people get surprised because they require you to actually do something, like analyze a network diagram or identify a vulnerability in a scenario, rather than just pick the right letter from a list. If you’ve only been reading the material and haven’t practiced applying it, the PBQs will feel like a different exam.

For study materials, Professor Messer is the first name most people mention and for good reason. His free course content is thorough and has genuinely helped an enormous number of people pass this exam without spending a fortune on prep. Jason Dion’s course on Udemy is another popular option that covers the material well. Practice exams are non-negotiable. Don’t read through everything and assume you’re ready. Get comfortable with the question format, the time pressure, and the way the exam phrases scenarios before you walk into the testing center for real.

One practical note: the Security+ exam fee is $404 as of 2026. That’s real money. Studying seriously before you pay that fee is a financial decision as much as it is a preparation one. CompTIA occasionally offers discount vouchers, and certain training providers include vouchers with their course purchases, so it’s worth looking for those before you pay full retail. A passed exam at a discount is the same credential as a passed exam at full price. The Security+ is a career launcher for the right person, and the time you invest in preparing for it correctly is time genuinely well spent.

Big Dog Cert

Alright, lemme give it to ya straight. No sugarcoating, no corporate fluff, just the real deal. I'm Mike. Fifty years on this planet, and I've done it all. I started out in IT back when "the cloud" was just what you saw out the window, worked my way through HR (yeah, I've been the guy who had to sit across the table from people and keep a straight face), and then did a stretch in sales where I learned real quick that if you can't sell yourself, nobody's buying what you're pitching. Three careers. One guy. Zero patience for textbooks that read like they were written by robots.
